Accessibility to water

This section analyses the service levels in Liberia counties as defined by the service levels of SDG goal 6.1. , We define basic service level as people having access to a functioning and improved water point within 1 km, and the limited service level as people having access to a functioning and improved water point between 1 and 2 km. The process used was:

  1. Define circles of 1 and 2 km radius around each water point
  2. Using the 2014 WorldPop population estimate, count the number of people inside each area *
  3. Using the total population count per county, which is also obtained from WorldPop, compute the percentage service levels.

* The population data that was used is an estimate. This method of estimating coverage is not ideal, because of the uncertainty in the data sources such as WorldPop used.

Accesablity per county

This table shows the results of this process per county, and for all of Liberia. In total, 43.6% of the people in Liberia have basic access to water, and 14.4% have limited access. The table shows a large variation in coverage numbers.

population per functioning water point

The population per functioning water point in most cases is significantly higher than the 250 people per water point which is the commonly used limit for sustainable access.
